In our experience, it is best to not discuss your considerations until you have selected a program. Also, based on the behaviors and the level of need of the teen, it may be in the best interest to use a transport service to handle the transition and not discuss this decision with your teen. When teens are struggling and exhibiting manipulative behaviors, bringing in an outside professional defuses the situation and minimizes the potential for manipulative behaviors and even physical danger. Remember, making the decision to seek help was prompted because you are living with an irrational, struggling teenager, so the likelihood of having a rational conversation about seeking help is very minimal. Air on the side of caution and speak to our advocates about which approach is best in the current circumstances.
