Project Description

Residential Treatment Centers

Residential Treatment Centers vary in the types of problems that work with, their structure and the methods of therapy that they use. And RTC for children, adolescents and young adults treat multiple conditions from substance abuse, to emotional and personality disorders as well as mental illness. Most often, there is family history related issues that contribute to the presenting struggles, which include physical, emotional and sexual abuse. There may also be a family history of the same types of disorders existing in siblings, parents or grandparents. Residential Treatment Centers are clinically focused, providing behavior management and treatment for the particular condition. It’s common that some can have a dual diagnosis as there are several presenting issues that need clinical assessment and treatment. Some of these include, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), self-injury(cutting), anxiety disorders, Border Line Personality Disorder, eating disorders, sexual misconduct and learning disabilities. Another rising disorder is Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) which is very common amongst children that have lost a parent through death, incarceration or adoption.

Most RTC’s structure their program using a behavior modification paradigm, community or positive peer culture model or some other relationally oriented model. With each model there will be a point, level or phase system to help track the growth and progress through the program.
A RTC is necessary for males or females that have significant disruptions in their lives, including school, relationships with family and friends, loss of motivation and self-destructive behaviors.

One important advantage of a residential treatment center is the environment is less threatening and more healing than a psychiatric hospital or drug rehabilitation center. A RTC is set up to feel much like a home environment with structure, consistency and limited triggers as the resident works on their individual, group and family therapy as well as life skills, character development and academics. These centers are highly specialized to treat many addictive and psychological disorders in small, private settings to provide quality service and care by licensed professionals and trained staff.
